GM Stellan Brynell comments round 5.

Also the fifth round was filled with fighting spirit. You always fear quick draws in the last round of a tournament but that was not anything you had to fear and all the three games had a winner.

The game that attracted the most attention was of course Anish Giri against Jon Ludvig Hammer, the two tournament leaders. Giri followed the game Grandelius-Hammer for a while but he chose 11.Re1 (instead of 11.Ng5) and got some pressure. Hammer did not want to play passive and tried to release his position with 21...Bxb3 22.cxb3 c5. The expected move from Hammer was too take back with his rook on his 24th move but instead he chose to exchange queens. Giri won the pawn on a6, but his extra pawn was a doubled one and his bishop got stucked on a6 so the position did not looked too bad for black. Giri however revealed some excellent endgame technique and won a nice game after a exchange sacrifice.

Pia Cramling equalized easily as black against Tiger Hillarp Persson. But she allowed white to take on f6 and that was probably a mistake, 10...dxc4 bxc4 Sbd7 looks like a reasonable alternative. Now Hillarp got the chance to play a elegant exchange sacrifice (15.Rxb7) where his compensation was that black king was very unsafe and the horrible pawn structure. With energetic play Hillarp won.

The longest game, both in the round and the tournament, was between Nils Grandelius and Jonny Hector. The middlegame was very complicated and white seemed to be better, but Hector did find 21...Nb4 with counterplay against the white queenside. Grandelius countered with a exchange sacrifice (a theme in fifth round) and got good compensation. After the game he was not to happy with the move 35.Rxf7 and thought he should have played 35.Nxe6 fxe6 36.Tf7 followed by the advance of his c-pawn with good winning chances. Even after the game continuation black was under pressure but Hector found a piece-down endgame that seemed to give good drawing chances. (Was this really necessary? Could not black play 42...Rg8?) Grandelius manoeuvred for a long time and in the end Hector made a mistake. Had he played 82...Bg2 instead of 82...Be2 the position probably is drawn. After this mistake Grandelius had control and won the game after 119 moves.
