Even the last round offered interesting games. You really can´t complain about the players' fighting spirit.
Ivan Sokolov played very aggressively against Nigel Short. He needed a win to catch up with the englishman. But Short defended very well and Sokolov got big problems with his weak pawn on e5.Short won the pawn and although Sokolov put up a hard fight he could not save the game.
The game between Emanuel Berg and Tomi Nybäck was very sharp. After black´s 16...d5 according to theory 17.exd5 should be best although Bergs 17 Nxe5 seems playable. After the mistake 24. Qe2 (24.Qe3 should be played according to Berg) Nybäck took over the game and could finish Berg off with a mating attack.
In the game between Tiger Hillarp Persson and Nils Grandelius the equilibrium never was disturbed. Hillarp tried to put some pressure on Grandelius in the endgame but the young player defended very well.
This years tournament winner was Nigel Short with the impressive score 4½/5. His superiority was never really questioned. From a Swedish perspective especially gratifying was Nils Grandelius fine second place. He showed that he has great potential in the future.
